Elan Cohen, PhD | Clinical Psychologist

WELCOME
I'm a clinical psychologist and postdoctoral fellow at Soho Psychoanalytic, where I work with adults and adolescents of all ages, identities, and socio-cultural backgrounds. I completed my PhD at Adelphi University, where I researched the intersections of historical trauma and what is commonly called psychosis. Since 2012, my clinical experience has included social service agencies, hospital programs, and university clinics. I have training in psychoanalytic approaches from NYU Postdoc and L'École freudienne du Québec. In addition to individual, group, couples and family therapy, I have experience conducting evaluations for asylum-seekers and helping patients navigate gender-affirming treatment. A sample of my scholarly work can be found here.

PSYCHOTHERAPY
Psychoanalytic therapy is an in-depth approach to treatment, responsive to your singular way of being. It treats symptoms not only to alleviate suffering, but as messages seeking expression, often pointing to a multiplicity of untold stories. By listening to their echoes in speech, the body, and the therapeutic relationship, we work together toward a deeper sense of agency and possibility.
MY PRACTICE
I offer a receptive, nonjudgmental space where you are invited to speak openly. I work in-person in Soho and virtually as needed. Individual therapy is once or twice weekly. My fee is industry standard with flexibility according to need. I can provide documentation for reimbursement if you have out-of-network benefits. I am currently able to accept some insurances, as well. An initial consultation is typically a conversation aimed at getting to know you. If we meet and you feel like speaking more, that usually suggests a good fit.
